Why Not Use a 100% Urea Solution?

Although urea is a key component of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), using a 100% urea solution would not be effective in reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines. DEF is a mixture of urea and deionized water that is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines to break down nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. A 100% urea solution would be too concentrated and could cause engine damage due to its high alkalinity. In addition, the urea would not effectively break down the NOx emissions, which would lead to increased air pollution and reduced engine performance.

The DEF solution must be carefully formulated with the correct concentration of urea to water to ensure optimal performance and safety for both the engine and the environment. Therefore, it is important to use only DEF that meets the ISO 22241 standard, which specifies the correct ratio of urea to deionized water and ensures that the DEF meets the necessary purity and quality standards.
